Best Shows Ever|Sunday Social

Well, maybe not the best ever. Just the best to me right now.

It seems like ages since I participated in Sunday Social and I am so glad to be back. I can’t wait to check out everyone’s posts.

What is your favorite thing to watch on a girls night?

My girlfriends and I don’t get together often because of our schedules. When we do, we head out for a night on the town.  We people watch when we’re out. Does that count?

What is your favorite thing to watch on your day off?

On my days off from work, Mister and I catch up on our favorite prime time shows. We love Hostages, Person of Interest, Criminal Minds, and The First 48

What is your favorite thing to watch when you’re sick?

Suburgatory, 2 Broke Girls, The Middle, Modern Family, and American Dad

What is the last movie you saw in the theater?

It’s been a while since we ventured to the theater. We try to go when everyone in our family is available. For that reason, the last movie we saw was Jack the Giant Slayer.  We hope to get to the movies in the next few weeks. We want to see the Lego Movie.

What are your top three favorite movies or tv shows?

Since I have so many, I decided to do three of each. I feel as if I am doing a disservice to the others, but I guess shows really don’t have feelings, so they won’t know the difference.

Idris Elba….. Need. I. Say. More?

Person of Interest

Person of Interest

I am not really sure where the show will go now that Taraji P. Henson’s character has been killed, but the new girl shows promise.

House of Cards

House of Cards

This show. OMG, this this show. I think I watched the entire season in one day. Did I mention I was a binge watcher? We tend to let episodes pile up because we can’t stand to wait to see what’s going to happen week after week. Season two will be available on Valentine’s Day. I think Mister and I will stay in that night. This show, red velvet cheesecake, and wine. Best. Night. Ever.

I saved the best for last. SCANDAL. I haven’t watched a single episode of Season 3. I watch them all at the end of the season. Yep, it’s because I am way to impatient to wait on the next one. I am glad I did it that way, too. I can’t believe Kerry Washington had the audacity to take time off to have a baby. GOSH!! Of course, I am kidding. I’m happy for her, and I will be happy when she returns. Instagram is kind of dead without the memes about the show. Speaking of IG, click HERE to follow me.

Sunday Social

Well, there you have it. Do we share some of the same favorite shows? Are there shows that you think I’d like? Don’t be shy, leave me a comment so I can check them out.

Inspiration | 2014 Blogger Challenge

Happy New Year!! I wish you all a wonderful and prosperous 2014. I am so happy to be a part of the 2014 Blogger Challenge. From what I’ve heard, there are approximately 400 blogger participating. How awesome is that?

Our first topic is inspiration. I was asked to find a picture or a quote that inspires me and may potentially inspire you.  Well, what do you think? Personally, I believe this was a great choice. So many people waste time on things that don’t matter. They do things that literally make them unhappy. In case no one noticed, LIFE. IS. SHORT. We don’t have much time to complete our assignments here on earth. We should do our best to do what we love for as long as we are able to do it.

So here we are, five days into the new year with 360 days to make a difference, make a change, or seize an opportunity. Stop being afraid. Step out of faith. Don’t take no for an answer. I believe in you.

I started my journey in October. I decided to go back to school to help make a better life for my family. I was terrified. I still am. My post was nearly late because I was consumed with school work. I know it will be a struggle to balance my marriage, our children, work, and life, but I have resolved to get it done.

What are you inspired to do?

Quick Update

Hi Guys & Gals…. probably mostly Gals, but you know what I mean.

I apologize for having left you unattended for so long, but life threw me for a loop and I had to get things back in order. Priorities and such. Since I am one of the adults in our home, I should probably act like one.

I am happy to announce that the smoke is starting to clear and I will start posting regularly again. I hope you miss me as much as I miss you. I look forward to catching up with you all.

I have tons of things I want to share. In the meantime, take care of yourselves.

Brooklyn’s Finest

Hi Everyone. I know I have been off the grid for a while, but I will be back to posting regularly soon. In the meantime, a wonderful blogger has agreed to post for me today. She also happens to be my cousin. We come from the same small town and spent a lot of time together in our younger years. She has grown into a fantastic woman and I am proud to call her my friend.

Hi TwentyFiveSeasons readers! I am Shameka, but I’m known to the social media world as BKsFinest1920. Let me start by explaining my handle. I was born and raised in a rural town in Florida. I lived there for 32 years before obtaining a position in New York City, where I then relocated to Brooklyn, hence BKs Finest. I am also a member of the greatest sorority on the planet, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Zeta was founded in 1920, hence BKsFinest1920.

Who am I? Someone once told me, “We are the sum of our experiences.” Truer words have never been spoken. I am the culmination of a girl who grew up in the projects in a family of five raised by a single mother because my father dealt with his drug addiction during my early years. I still managed to do well in school, graduating in the top tier of my class and eventually obtaining my Master’s degree. I began teaching middle school right out of college (one of the best experiences of my life). I did it for seven years before moving to New York and working in higher education. I miss the classroom only because I miss working with children and adolescents. I am now mentoring a young girl through Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City and hope to actually do more by mentoring more young ladies through some other method. I believe that it why I was put here on this planet. My experiences have led me here.

My blog is titled “Cute, Curvy, and Uncensored”.  It’s me (cute and curvy) sharing my thoughts, which are not always in line with popular opinion (uncensored).  Although it’s very new, I talk about current issues in the world, pop culture, and things that inspire me, such as fashion. I’ve also shared my thoughts on a whole host of other topics including my former pregnant student, my thoughts on race relations, inspiration I’ve gained from the show “Project Runway”, and I’m now participating in the 30-day Single Woman Blog Challenge. The posts from the challenge are interesting, to say the least, and personal. It’s definitely a stretch to bare my innermost thoughts. It just goes to show that you can find a variety of topics on my blog.

Meka3.3What’s to come on the blog? I want to continue to share my thoughts, as random as they may be, and use the blog as a platform to bring awareness to the issues of those without a voice, i.e. children (especially girls) and minorities. In order for these groups to prosper and defy the stereotypes and statistics that are associated with them, people must become aware.

I just want to leave my mark in this world helping others, and my blog is one channel to do so. I welcome you to visit and please feel free to comment. I love to chat with my readers!

Well, there you have it. It’s she awesome? Please visit her blog as often as you can. By that, I mean subscribe to her feed and read and comment on every post. No pressure.

5 Thing To Do On Black Friday Besides Shop

Black Friday

I don’t know a person on the planet that doesn’t know about Black Friday. You know, the day when crazed shoppers wait in line for hours to spend money that they will have to work overtime the following year to pay off? Yep, that’s Black Friday. My family and I have no plans to participate in the madness. We will be engaging in some or all of the activities listed below.

  1. Catch Up On Sleep – With all of the excitement of Thanksgiving. I barely sleep. Our family can’t seem to get home for Christmas, but every year, we are all free on Turkey Day so that’s when we stay up all night, catch up, play games, and just be a family. No one sleeps because we don’t want to miss anything. For us, Black Friday is about rest.
  2. Plan A Movie Day – It doesn’t necessarily have to be movies, but grab enough snacks for a small army and put some blankets down for everyone and enjoy. Black Friday is a great day to grab movies from RedBox or make good use of your Netflix subscription. We have both Netflix and HULU Plus so will will be entertained for the entire day and then some. Usually, we let everyone pick what they want to watch and take turns until each person taps out. I am rarely the last one awake.
  3. Play Board/Card Games – We have an impressive collection of games. We also have the game Family Game Night for the Wii. I am partial to the Wii because it will get us up and moving. The children will take any opportunity to play video games since they don’t get to play often. Scene It is also a family favorite. Playing games will get your family talking and laughing and before you know it the day is over.
  4. Travel – Most people will be standing in line early Friday morning. Do you know where their cars will be? In a packed parking lot waiting to be driven to the next packed parking lot. Do you know where their cars won’t be? On the highway. Black Friday is a great travel day. Since my parents live a few hours away, the drive won’t be that bad, but some of you have long drives ahead. Why not get a head start on getting home?
  5. Plan for Cyber Monday – It’s Black Friday for online shoppers. Just think, you won’t have to stand outside in the cold, endure long lines, hurting feet, or mean customer service people. It’s bad enough that the stores will be open on Thanksgiving and their employees won’t get to enjoy the holiday as it was intended to be spent. Why not give them one less person to check out and shop on Monday instead?

Well, there you have it. Our family will be safely at home on Black Friday and whether you choose to shop or stay in, we hope you had a happy Thanksgiving and a great Black Friday.

6 Things I Am Thankful For This Season

This post was no easy task. I had a list a mile long about things that I am thankful for. I could have easily gone for two, but I am sure you don’t have all day to read about lil ol’ me. I’m linking up with Ashley and Neely today for Sunday Social. So after visiting with me, hop around and read posts from a few other bloggers that are participating today.

Sunday Social
Thankful for Hubs
I completely love and adore my husband. He puts up with all of my craziness. He loves me through my meltdowns and he is an awesome father to our children. He has seen me at my worst and loves me until I make it back to my best. I’m not just writing this because he read my blog; it’s the truth.
Thankful for parents
I am blessed to still have both my parents here with me. Although they are no longer married to each other, that has never impacted their love for me or their grandchildren. When necessary, they have coordinated their schedules to attend events for the kids. Most of all, my parents still treat me like their little girl. Of course, they know I am an adult, but I’m still their baby.
Thankful for dialysis
Since my husband has ESRD, he has to have dialysis three times a week. He has been on dialysis for more than three years and we are hoping that he will get the call for the kidney transplant surgery soon. In the meantime, we are blessed with the artificial kidney provided by the dialysis center.
Thankful for work
I know what it’s like to be without work. It’s rough not knowing if someone will call when you send out your resume. I am thankful to have work right now. I was without and job for about a month and then I worked a crazy low paying job for about two months. I think I spent more money to get back and forth to work than I made going there. It took us three months to get back on track with the bills. Thank God for His provision.
Thankful for my children
Those little boogers get on my last nerves sometimes. They spend all my money and eat all my food. For some reason, I can’t get them to move out of my house. Maybe it’s because I really love having them there. I would rather have them home with me than anywhere else in the world. They are the little loves of my life. The reason my heart beats and sometimes they are the reason I want to pull my hair out and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Thankful for friends and family
I am thankful for my extended family. I am thankful for friends who are just like family. I am glad to have relationships with people who love and care for me. I grew up as an only child even though I have siblings. By the time I was in third grade, they had all left home and I was alone. It was hard to make friends so the friends I had were very special. I enjoy visiting my family members in other states and countries. We spend a lot of time sharing photos on social media sites and I hope we have a reunion soon.
So, there you have my list of things that I am thankful for…what about you?
What are you thankful for this year?

There’s a Hole In My Bucket

Sometimes, I feel like I get on God’s nerves.

I feel like I bring Him an issue, He gives me an answer, and I can’t figure out how to make it work. Something like the video below.

Did you see how he ended up exactly where he started? That’s how I feel. I ask all of the right questions. I do what He tells me to do and I feel like I come up with nothing. I know God wouldn’t send me on a wild goose chase. There is a lesson I have to learn; maybe I keep missing it. Could this be my wilderness experience? I don’t want to spend the next 40 years wandering around hoping that I won’t see the same rock that I carved “Sophia was here” in last week. I certainly don’t want to die here. So what do I do now?

I bet you thing the next part of this post has the answer to that question, huh? Psych. It doesn’t. I don’t have the answers. I have to be patient and keep praying and keep wandering until it is revealed to me. I hope you stick with me as I work through this difficult period in my life. I am being as open and transparent as I can. I find that is the only way I can be right now. I have to be true to myself and true to you. However many of you are are there that actually read my thoughts.

I find myself in a few different seasons of life at the same time and sharing it seems to be the only way to stay sane.

I Am An Old Yeller

No, not the dog. But it can sometimes sound that way.

I yell at my kids. Once I get started on a rant, it can be hard to get me to stop. I realize that this is counterproductive and rarely produces the results that I want, but it just keeps happening. I sincerely want to stop. I sometimes cringe when I think of the things I have said. I can say that I am under a lot of stress and I have a lot going on, but in truth, I have no excuse. I want to change, but I have no idea where to start.

The most logical starting point would be why. Why do I get angry? Why do I yell? Basically, they aren’t doing what I feel they should do. When I was young, I had too much freedom. I didn’t have to earn anything. I did what I wanted, when I wanted. Although it seemed to be a lot of fun, it was more than my young mind could handle. I never wanted that for my children. Overall, I have to admit, they are good kids. Not buts. They are good kids. I want so much to keep it that way. I understand that mistake will be made and that is how they will learn, but some mistakes can be avoided.

Example: My boys like to wear hoodies. That is a big No-No. I bet you know why. Yep, Trayvon Martin. No matter what your stance is on this case, you will never know the feeling that comes over me each time I send my children into the world. Before, I just feared for my sons, but now I fear for my daughter too. Renisha McBride opened my eyes to that. By making sure they don’t wear their hoods, I feel as though I keep them safe. I don’t want them to lose their lives over something that could have been avoided.

Example: School. There is no reason for them not to do their best in school. Now, doing your best, doesn’t mean straight As. It means just what I say, your BEST. That will differ from day to day and I accept that. After all, I am writing this post about being a yelling mom. Every day I do my best. I just know I can do better. The old saying, “If you want to hide information from black people, put it in a book” has always hurt me. Why? Because I love to read. It is important that they love to learn.

Lastly, I want to change because I love them. I don’t want them to be afraid to talk to me. I want to be able to transition from a mother/child relationship to a mother/young adult relationship. Yelling won’t help that. I don’t do it to be hurtful or malicious. I just wasn’t taught any other way. I do the best with what I have. I think all parents do. Please pray that God’s will be done in our lives.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to posting my progress.

Random Friday Chatter

I don’t really do that. My friends are so lame, they aren’t doing anything anyway. We all end up sitting at home texting each other wishing we planned something. We surprised ourselves by going out two weeks in a row this month. That’s a world record for us. On to the letters.

Dear Husband, this has been a rough week for both of us. I am praying that the time will pass quickly and I will be home again soon. Dear Thanksgiving, I can’t wait for you to get here. I will get to visit with family and friends that I don’t get to see any other time of year. It’s better than Christmas. Dear New Patient, as much as I like working with you, I hope you get to a point where you don’t need me for as long as we thought. I was just getting in the swing of being back home and I kinda want to go back. Let’s get this rehab going. Dear School, I am enjoying our relationship. It’s not as stressful as I remember it being a few years ago. That may be because we are still in the honeymoon phase. I will reserve any further judgement. Dear Puppies, I miss you guys and your wonderful cuddles. Dear Dad, thank you for the conversation we had this morning. I feel much better. God has truly blessed me. Dear Tummy, I have no idea what happened today, but you totally ruined my ‘no throwing up’ streak. I am utterly dismayed. Please, lets not do it again for a few years or never works for me too. Dear Weekend, we won’t get to do much, I will be at work. So I will be studying and blogging. I won’t complain, it could be worse. Dear Readers, I hope you have an action packed weekend with lots of fun, food, and friendship involved. Stop by and tell me about it, will you?
